Internship Proposal - 2020

 1. Designing and fabricating stack components using electrodialysis (ED) technology for water desalination systems

Short Description/Objectives:

Water quality (used for cooking, washing clothes, watering plants …) with the high levels of salinity delivered to rural areas of southern Vietnam is one of the most serious issues that people here have been facing. To date, although reverse osmosis (RO) technology has been wisely employed for desalinating brackish water or seawater, but the cost of RO system is still high due to the considerable electrical energy input required to operate high-pressure pumps. Currently, INT has been developing a desalination system using electrodialysis (ED) as an alternative choice to produce 20 L/h of water for home use, households.

An ED stack consists of two electrodes, a cathode and an anode, along with a series of anion (AEM) and cation exchange membranes (CEM) separated by spacers that provide two isolated flow paths. Each set of anion and cation exchange membranes constitutes a cell pair. All of these components are packaged in a housing that has inlets and outlets for the feed water, desalinated (dilute) water, reject (concentrate) water, and rinse solution for the electrodes.

The trainee will have the task of design and fabrication of stack components, including: stack frame, electrodes, membranes, inlets and outlets. Mechanical engineeringknowledge is required; basic background of chemistry is an advantage.

2. Designing, installing and testing a water desalination system using electrodialysis (ED) technology

Currently, INT has been developing a desalination system using electrodialysis (ED) as an alternative choice to produce 20 L/h of water for home use, households.
A water desalination system using ED technology includes filters (pre carbon filter, sediment filter, post carbon filter), pumps (concentrate pump, booster pump, rinse stream pump…), tanks, ED stack, taps, salinity sensors… The water desalination system can be implemented in two distinct architectures: batch and continuous. The batch process involves recirculation of both the dilute and concentrate streams through the stack until the salt concentration in the dilute tank decreases to the desired level. In the continuous process, stack parameters such as voltage and flow rate would be modulated to produce the desired salinity in the dilute stream within a single pass, based upon the feed water salinity available in the user's house.
The trainee will be tasked to design, install and evaluate/ test the water desalination system based on the available materials/ devices at INT. Mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge is required, basic background of electronics is an advantage.

3. Designing and fabricating electronic circuits for water desalination systems using electrodialysis (ED) technology

When a voltage potential is applied across the electrodes, water molecules dissociate at the cathode to produce hydroxide (OH-) ion and hydrogen gas (H2). At the anode, hydrogen ions (H+), oxygen (O2), and chlorine gas (Cl2) are produced. To achieve the most cost-effective performance, the voltage of the cell pair, the time required desalination, the flow rate of stream should be controlled and optimized with the number of modeled cell pairs (N).
The trainee will be tasked to calculate, design, fabricate the hardware of electronic circuits and write code for the software to drive the system. Electronic engineering knowledge is required, basic background of IT (Information Technology) is an advantage.

4. Software development for instrument interface

Short Description/Objectives:
INT is developing a portable potentiostat device for electrochemical determination of heavy metals in drinking water. This device produces the data in the relationship between potential and current signal. In some cases, the results should be optimized. For instance: subtracting baseline (Fig. 1), smooth (Fig. 2 and Fig. 3).

Fig 1. Peak: a) before subtracting baseline (blue line), b) after subtracting baseline (red line)

Fig 2. Curve before smoothing

Fig 3. Curve after smoothing

The trainee will be tasked to develop these at INT. The trainee should be required to have the background of statistics and be familiar with software platforms like Arduino, Lab view.

 5. Simulations of the Droplet Ejection in Piezoelectric Inkjet Printing
Short Description/Objectives:
Inkjet printing technology is a modern manufacturing technique in which inkjet printer is used to eject ink droplet out of nozzle. In this project, droplet ejection in piezoelectric inkjet printing is simulated by COMSOL Multiphysics. The main goal of trainee is to develop nozzle model as well as simulate the droplet ejection. After that, the trainee will be trained to use high speed camera system to observe the ink ejection.

Figure 1. 2D shapes of a nozzle in piezoelectric inkjet printer
The trainee will have the chance to work with COMSOL Multiphysics software and high speed camera system which can be used to obtain about 2.1 million frame per second. Then, with the help of the tutor, the trainee will observe and capture many pictures of the droplet ejection out of nozzle. These pictures will allow us to understand more about inkjet printing process and compare with simulation results. Moreover, the trainee will be able to acquire valuable understanding of high speed camera system as well as inkjet printing process which is applied in many industry and research fields.
